The Province of East Lancashire has recently donated £300 to the Blackburn Samaritans, the generosity of the brethren of our order was ‘match funded’ by Grand Conclave. This means that a total donation of £600 has been made and Frank Smith our Provincial Grand Supreme Ruler had great pleasure in presenting the cheque to Judith Houghton.
Judith is the Director for the Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Samaritans who are wholly dependent on fund raising to continue the round the clock support they offer to the community. Upon receiving the cheque she thanked Frank for this wonderful donation and all the brethren of East Lancashire Secret Monitors for their contribution. She went on to say that this money will ensure they can continue with the work that they do. She explained it takes over £30,000 per year to keep the Samaritans in a position to deal with around two thousand calls into the branch each month. The money is needed to go towards the upkeep of the building. The work however is done entirely on a voluntary basis by the 72 people who help out.
The Samaritans offer confidential support ‘24/7’ to allow people to be themselves.
Our past Deputy Supreme Ruler, Stephen Jackson is one of the back office team helping out along with his wife who is one of the fifty five ‘listening’ volunteers with the Blackburn Samaritans. Stephen was on hand to present the donation with Frank.
Anyone can talk to The Samaritans no matter what is getting to them. They are just ordinary people, who give up their time to listen.
